The Truth About Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Systems

http://www.freedrinkingwater.com/images-new/ro-v2-raulshadow-modified.jpg

It's time you learned the truth about reverse osmosis water purification systems! This is a very popular water filtering technology. Although it works well, it does have a couple of issues that you might like to know about. It's wasteful! And also it tends to demineralize water. (Takes the trace minerals like calcium out of the water.) Let's talk about all of this in some detail.

Reverse osmosis water purification systems used to be perhaps the most popular domestic water filtration technology. That was back a few years ago when water filtration burst on the scene. Lately, however, other technologies like carbon/ceramic filtration seems to be gaining ground.

One of the big problems with reverse osmosis is it's very wasteful! According to the make and model of the system, you can use from three to ten gallons of water for every pure gallon you create. The other three to ten gallons go right down the drain! That might be okay with you, if you're single and just filtering your drinking water, but if you have a family, then just wait until you get your water bill!

Reverse osmosis systems aren't going to be used, for instance, for purifying your bath and shower water. But you really should consider doing that! You can ingest as many, if not more, toxins during a hot shower as you can drinking a glass of the same contaminated water.

Another issue is the fact that reverse osmosis water purification systems tends to demineralize water. That is, it takes the trace minerals like calcium and magnesium out of the water. These are actually beneficial and are supposed to be there. This is what makes water purified through reverse osmosis taste flat. Also, it's not known if there are any severe health consequences to drinking demineralized water.

Turns out from a price point of view, and also from a health point of view, reverse osmosis might not be the best system for you. So, what are your alternatives?

Well, you could try 4 stage alkaline water filters, and they're much more cheaper than reverse osmosis. Ultraviolet light purifiers work well, but only for water that's contaminated with living organisms. It will do nothing for lead or asbestos in the water.

Probably your best overall bet for water filtration are 4 stage alkaline water filters. These filters can get everything out of the water that reverse osmosis can. Also, they're cost effective, not wasteful, and have very low maintenance. Reverse osmosis water purification systems are better than nothing. So if you've already bought one, don't despair. Just decide to go with a 4 stage alkaline water filters next time.
